OXFORD

A walk around the City

A CHOICE OF 3 WALKS

The 3 walks are short (0.7 miles), medium (2,0 miles) and longer (3.0 miles).

Oxford is obviously a University City and it is felt that a quiz could get a bit repetitive so each walk takes you around the sites of Oxford and the history. The 3 lengths of walks are simply extensions of the lesser walk so, in the case of the medium walk, you can decide to extend your walk into the longer walk while you are out.

Getting into Oxford

By Bus

It's just a short walk to the bus stop which is on Banbury Road.

Directions to the Bus Stop

Come out of the hotel and turn right along Linton Road until you come to Banbury Road.

There are 2 alternatives available.

Alternative 1 (if we decide as a family to do a bus trip, this will be the same one so use alternative 2 to get into the city)

Cross Banbury Road and turn left towards Oxford. The bus stop is next to Canterbury Road. Don't be fooled by the direction of the bus as it is a circular route!

The bus you require is a "City Sightseeing" bus, it's red with logos all over it.

NOTE: bus stop 16 is a request stop so you MUST keep an eye out and signal that you want it to stop!

The cost is £16.00 for seniors, £18.00 for adults and £11.00 for children. a Family ticket is available at £49.00. You can get on and off all day but more importantly, you will see the sights that you miss if you decide not to do Walk 2. Alternatively you can skip the walks and still see the sights of Oxford and stop for refreshment.

Alight at bus stop 19 or 20.

Cheaper Alternative 2.

When you get to Banbury Road, stay on the left heading towards Oxford, and you will see a bus stop for Stagecoach buses numbers 2 and 2A (St Margaret's Road East). Use the following live link to see when buses are due.

Oxford St Margarets Road east (opp) - Live Departures (oxfordbus.co.uk)

Reverse this route for coming back.

From bus stop 19, just walk to the crossroads behind you. You should see the pedestrianised road "Cornmarket Street" and the Saxon tower of "St Michael at the North Gate". Start the walk at this road junction.

From bus stop 20, you will be in front of the Randolph Hotel. You can see the junction between Beaumont Street and St Giles just a few metres away. Go to St Giles and turn right along St Giles. You will see the Martyrs Monument across the road to your left. Walk along St Giles to the next crossroads. Opposite you should see the pedestrianised road "Cornmarket Street" and the Saxon tower of "St Michael at the North Gate". Start the walk at this road junction.

Choose your walk but this way into the City is closest to the short walk (0.7 miles).

If you catch the bus but wish to do Walk 2, get off at bust stop 20, cross the road by the Martyrs Memorial and turn left on the opposite side of St Giles, as if you are heading out of the city. you will pass St John's College on the right and you will see a fork in the road. Take the right fork and turn left into Keeble Road, a short way along Banbury Road. at the other end of Keeble Road is the start of Walk 2 (2.0 miles).

None of the walks are committing. you can abort them at any stage, though none of the walks are particularly long.

Walking into the City

It isn't a long walk into town unless you are struggling on your feet. This route takes you to the start of the Medium and longer walks but you can access the shorter walk here too.

Directions to the start

Walk 2 medium (2.0 miles) and walk 3 longer (3.0 miles).

Leaving the hotel, turn right along Linton Road to the main road, Banbury Road. Turn left towards Oxford city centre, remaining in this side of the road.

Turn left at Parks Road, alongside the park with the University Departments of Engineering Science, Materials and Physics and stop when you see this building.

This is the start of the walk.
